316L STAINLESS STEEL

Austenitic 316L

Overview: 316L Stainless Steel

316L stainless steel, a low-carbon version of 316, is part of the austenitic family and known for its enhanced molybdenum content compared to its counterpart. This addition not only elevates 316L’s overall performance above 310 and 304 stainless steels but also enhances its corrosion resistance. Ideal for a broad range of applications, 316L steel offers a balanced combination of durability and weldability, making it a preferred choice for professionals seeking reliability and quality.

What Is Stainless Steel 316L

316L Stainless Steel Characteristics

316L, with its reduced carbon content capped at 0.03%, is designed for scenarios demanding high corrosion resistance without the possibility for post-weld annealing. Distinguished by its superior resistance to carbide precipitation compared to 316, 316L steel remains resilient in temperatures ranging from 427°C to 857°C (800°F to 1575°F), conditions under which 316 ss is typically not recommended. While 316L steel offers enhanced corrosion resistance, it’s important to note that its mechanical properties may not match those of 316.

316L Stainless Steel Sheet & Coil Packing

In GHT, all of our stainless steel coils are packaged as per international standard to prevent any possible damage or loss. By default, for quantity less than 1 whole compete coil (our MOQ is 5 tons), we will use woven plastic bag to cover SS coils and then fix them upon wooden pallet for further protection. We can also package the SS coils as per your special requirement, though this can incur extra cost.

In GHT, all of our stainless steel sheets are packaged as per international standard to prevent any possible damage or loss. By default, we will use brown paper to cover SS sheets and then bundle them together onto wooden pallets. At times, upon some customers’ requests, we will also apply reinforced package with extra metal straps fixed on the four corners, though this can incur extra cost. For enhanced customer experience, we also accept customized package as per your requests.

316L Stainless Steel FAQ

No. We have only good quality SS 316L coil & sheet.

316L stainless steel and 316 are both esteemed for their marine-grade qualities, yet they exhibit distinct characteristics primarily due to their carbon content. 316L stainless steel is defined by its low carbon content, not exceeding 0.03%, enhancing its suitability for welding by minimizing carbon precipitation and elevating its corrosion resistance.

In contrast, 316 stainless steel possesses a moderate carbon level and incorporates 2% to 3% molybdenum, boosting its resilience to corrosion, acidic environments, and elevated temperatures. Both grades showcase exceptional formability, adept at processes like bending and deep drawing.

Corrosion Resistance
For environments where corrosion and high temperatures are concerns, 316L stainless steel is preferable. Its reduced carbon content grants it superior intergranular corrosion resistance, safeguarding weld integrity in a way 316 cannot match.

Cost Perspective
Despite the differences in carbon content, the pricing for 316L and 316 stainless steels remains comparably aligned.

While both grades share excellent corrosion resistance and durability, they differ significantly in composition and cost.

904L stainless steel incorporates a richer mix of elements including higher amounts of nickel and molybdenum, plus copper and nitrogen, compared to the simpler composition of 316L. This complex alloying renders 904L more costly but provides it with superior corrosion resistance and a higher temperature tolerance, making it suitable for demanding applications like chemical processing equipment and high-temperature settings in oil refineries.

316L stainless steel, on the other hand, offers versatile use and excellent weldability, making it a preferred choice for a broad range of applications from food processing machinery to marine equipment. Although 316L is highly resistant to corrosion and harsh conditions, 904L surpasses it in environments with extreme corrosive stresses.

The choice between stainless steel 316L vs. 904L often comes down to application specifics and budget considerations. Despite its higher cost and somewhat challenging weldability, 904L’s enhanced performance is beneficial for specialized high-stress environments, whereas 316L’s broad applicability and cost-effectiveness make it suitable for general purposes.
