439 Stainless Steel

Ferritic Stainless Steel 439

Overview: 439 Stainless Steel

439 stainless steel is a titanium-stabilized ferritic alloy containing up to 1.10% titanium, which enhances its resistance to intergranular corrosion. Initially developed in the 1950s for direct-fired water heater tanks, its use has evolved, especially in the EU, thanks to its excellent weldability and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

With a chromium content ranging from 17% to 19%, 439 steel offers robust corrosion resistance suitable for a variety of oxidizing conditions, from ordinary tap water to harsh boiling acids, and is also resistant to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. The alloy’s superior weldability negates the need for post-weld annealing, maintaining ductility and preventing intergranular corrosion without additional treatments.

What Is 439 Stainless Steel

439 Stainless Steel Features

439 ss is distinguished by its exceptional welding properties, alongside notable corrosion and oxidation resistance. This alloy maintains its oxidative integrity up to temperatures of 950°C. It’s engineered to withstand chloride stress corrosion cracking, with its resilience enhanced through minimal work hardening, which slightly elevates its tensile strength. Primarily utilized in sectors demanding high formability coupled with robust corrosion resistance, such as the automotive industry, 439 steel performs optimally with proper design, adequate post-welding treatment, and, when necessary, consistent maintenance. Its effectiveness in chloride-rich environments is influenced by various factors, including chloride concentration, ambient temperature, pH levels, and the redox potential, all crucial in the material’s application design.

How To Pack 439 Stainless Steel Sheet & Coil

In GHT, all of our stainless steel coils are packaged as per international standard to prevent any possible damage or loss. By default, for quantity less than 1 whole compete coil (our MOQ is 5 tons), we will use woven plastic bag to cover SS coils and then fix them upon wooden pallet for further protection. We can also package the SS coils as per your special requirement, though this can incur extra cost.

In GHT, all of our stainless steel sheets are packaged as per international standard to prevent any possible damage or loss. By default, we will use brown paper to cover SS sheets and then bundle them together onto wooden pallets. At times, upon some customers’ requests, we will also apply reinforced package with extra metal straps fixed on the four corners, though this can incur extra cost. For enhanced customer experience, we also accept customized package as per your requests.

439 Stainless Steel FAQs

Yes, 439 stainless steel exhibits magnetic properties as it is a ferritic variety. The magnetic nature of this stainless steel stems from its substantial ferrite content, a blend of iron and various elements, contributing to its overall composition. The inherent crystal structure of ferrite alongside iron is responsible for the magnetic characteristics observed in this type of steel.

The distinction between 439 and 304 stainless steel lies in their composition, corrosion resistance, heat tolerance, and cost. 439 steel, containing 16-18% chromium and 0.5-1.5% titanium, offers enhanced corrosion resistance due to its higher chromium content, compared to 304’s 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel composition. While both exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, 439’s superior chromium levels give it an edge, especially in high-temperature settings, making it suitable for uses like automotive exhausts where heat resistance is crucial. In terms of pricing, 439 typically comes at a higher cost, attributed to its specialized properties and higher chromium content, making it a more premium option compared to the widely used 304 stainless steel.

The comparison between 439 and 409 stainless steels primarily hinges on their composition, corrosion resistance, and heat endurance. 439 contains 16-18% chromium and 0.5-1.5% titanium, enhancing its corrosion resistance and making it suitable for various applications, including those demanding higher heat resistance. In contrast, 409 stainless steel, often with slightly lower chromium content and without titanium, offers good corrosion and heat resistance but not as pronounced as 439. While both grades are utilized in automotive exhaust systems, 439’s superior corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing environments, and its ability to withstand higher temperatures, often justify its higher cost compared to 409, which is generally chosen for its cost-effectiveness and satisfactory performance in less demanding conditions.
