420 Stainless Steel

Martensitic Alloy 420

Overview: 420 Stainless Steel

420, a hardenable martensitic alloy, is essentially a “higher carbon” version of 410, designed to enhance hardness and strength while retaining similar chromium levels. Despite having a lower chromium content (12% minimum) compared to the austenitic 304 grade (18% minimum), 420 still offers notable anti-corrosion properties, classifying it firmly within the stainless steel category rather than carbon steel. However, its use is somewhat restricted due to reduced ductility at low temperatures and diminished strength when over-tempered at high temperatures, leading to its infrequent welding applications.

What Is 420 Stainless Steel

420 Stainless Steel Features

420 alloy is recognized for its exceptional strength, hardness, and wear resistance, attributes attributed to its high carbon content. However, this comes at the expense of plasticity and weldability. With somewhat limited corrosion resistance, 420 is often chosen for components needing robust mechanical properties without the stringent demands for corrosion resistance.

Thanks to its optimal chemical composition, 420 steel is frequently selected for scenarios requiring both corrosion resistance and hardness. This makes it a preferred material for a diverse range of uses, including pump shafts, precision molds for plastics, mechanical components like cams and pivots, as well as for manufacturing firearms and various types of fasteners.

Additionally, 420 alloy is also chosen for critical medical and dental tools, encompassing surgical scissors, knife blades, and other cutlery, along with specialized instruments such as needle valves, lens molds, and precision gauges. Its durability and resistance qualities make it ideal for shear blades, hand tools, and valve components, underscoring its versatility across multiple industries.

How To Pack 420 Stainless Steel Sheet & Coil

In GHT, all of our stainless steel coils are packaged as per international standard to prevent any possible damage or loss. By default, for quantity less than 1 whole compete coil (our MOQ is 5 tons), we will use woven plastic bag to cover SS coils and then fix them upon wooden pallet for further protection. We can also package the SS coils as per your special requirement, though this can incur extra cost.

In GHT, all of our 420 stainless steel sheets are packaged as per international standard to prevent any possible damage or loss. By default, we will use brown paper to cover SS sheets and then bundle them together onto wooden pallets. At times, upon some customers’ requests, we will also apply reinforced package with extra metal straps fixed on the four corners, though this can incur extra cost. For enhanced customer experience, we also accept customized package as per your requests.

420 Stainless Steel FAQs

Yes, as a martensitic stainless steel, whether annealed or hardened, stainless steel 420 keeps magnetic.

Absolutely, 420 stainless steel is a commendable choice for knives, catering especially to chefs, hunters, and divers. 420 hardness ensures a good balance of toughness and high resistance, making it adept for various uses. One of 420’s standout features is its corrosion resistance, ideal for humid or marine environments.

However, it’s worth noting that while 420 steel maintains its sharpness less effectively than higher-end steels, it compensates with ease of sharpening. This attribute, coupled with its affordability, makes 420 stainless steel an excellent option for budget-friendly, low-end knives.

Composition: 420 stainless steel boasts a carbon content ranging from 0.15% to 0.40%, significantly higher than 304’s maximum of 0.08%.
Conversely, 304 stainless steel contains more chromium, between 18% and 20%, compared to 420’s 12% to 14%, enhancing its corrosion resistance.

Properties:
420 stainless steel is prized for its hardness and strength, making it ideal for applications requiring wear resistance, albeit with lesser corrosion resistance than 304.
304 stainless steel excels in corrosion resistance, making it a better choice for acidic or highly corrosive environments, though it lacks the hardness of 420.

Applications:
420 is often chosen for manufacturing cutting tools, surgical instruments, and molds, benefiting from its superior hardness and wear resistance.
304’s exceptional corrosion resistance makes it a go-to material for food processing equipment, chemical containers, and architectural features, suitable for a broader range of temperatures.
