Super Austenitic Stainless Steel

Super Austenitic, marked by its exceptional molybdenum content and enriched with elements like nitrogen and copper, elevates the standard in the stainless steel hierarchy. This alloy blend is designed for unparalleled corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, catering to the most demanding industrial conditions.

What is Super Austenitic Stainless Steel

Super austenitic alloy, alongside its counterparts super ferritic and super duplex, boasts elevated molybdenum contents, typically around 6% to 7%. Engineered for extreme environments found in the petrochemical, chemical, paper, and offshore industries, these alloys are tailored to withstand severe conditions.

History of Austenitic Stainless Steel

Early super austenitic steels incorporated titanium and tantalum to combat intergranular corrosion post-welding. The introduction of AOD and VOD refining techniques in the 1960s significantly reduced carbon content to below 0.03%, enhancing the steel’s purity and welding corrosion resistance. The evolution continued with the development of high-alloy variants, leveraging chromium, nickel, and molybdenum enhancements, alongside copper and silicon, leading to advanced grades like 317LM, 904L, and AL-6XN, enriched with nitrogen for improved performance.

Super Austenitic Stainless Steel Characteristics

Super austenitic steel, with its complex composition including high nickel, molybdenum, copper, and nitrogen, presents unique manufacturing challenges. It stands as a testament to advanced steelmaking capabilities, offering exceptional cold and hot workability akin to traditional Cr-Ni austenitic steels.

Super Austenitic Applications

Super austenitic alloy is pivotal in various sectors, from oil and petrochemical processing equipment to pulp and paper bleaching systems. It’s essential in power plant desulfurization units, offshore and seawater processing, salt industry mechanisms, and chloride-resistant heat exchangers, among other applications.
